A New Approach for Film, TV and Stage

NEROPA was developed by Belinde Ruth Stieve as a method to increase the proportion of women and encourage diversity in film projects onscreen and to sensitize and raise awareness among those involved. NEROPA is a protected brand and can also be used in other industries, as a bridge from present day gender imbalance to a multifaceted future onscreen.

The World is diverse & colourful and one half are women

Overall however, films and television have not been reflecting this reality. Films and programmes, fictional and non-fictional, are characterized by a strong male majority onscreen. Whether it’s talk shows, sports or feature films, the focus is mostly on men: men talk and women listen, men act and women look nice.
This imbalance has been going on for so long that most of the time we don’t even notice it any more. So we grow up with fewer images of women in the media and in fictional productions, and also with them being less diverse in character, profession, age, ethnicity etc. The lack of narrative range in film and television also affects the social reality around us. There are far too few role models, impulses and inspirational frictions – for women and men, girls and boys.

NEROPA is a new, unique method for reducing gender imbalance in scripts in a straightforward, systematic and low-threshold manner. It also encourages more diverse casting and a more open roles concept in script development.
